If you’re exploring Kyoto Station and looking for a hearty, comforting meal, stop by Tsukumo Udon’s Shiokoji main shop. It’s located just inside JR Kyoto Station at the B2 level, right by the East Exit ticket gate — super convenient for travelers. The star here is the Chicken Tempura & Egg Curry Udon: a rich iriko (dried sardine) broth topped with silky egg, spicy curry, and crispy chicken tempura. Don’t come hungry — you’ll want room for the rice, too.

How to order
- Buy a meal ticket from one of the two vending machines in front of the shop. The machines can be switched to English.
- Walk along the kitchen toward the back. At the serving counter, place your ticket on the tray there. Your udon will be placed on that tray when it’s ready.
- Choose any available table or sit at the counter. Before you sit, help yourself to the free toppings at the serving area — iriko (dried sardines) and tenkasu (tempura flakes).
- When you finish, return your tray and dishes to the return counter behind the kitchen.

What to expect — the dish
The Chicken Tempura & Egg Curry Udon (¥1,200) is built in two layers: a fluffy egg-and-iriko broth on top and a spicy curry roux beneath. At first bite you’ll get the gentle, savory flavors of the egg and iriko broth. As you eat, the curry layer mixes in and the taste gradually turns bolder and spicier — that evolving flavor is the real joy of this dish. The udon stays hot for a long time, so be careful not to burn yourself.

The serving includes two pieces of crispy chicken tempura and a side of white rice. You can choose whether the noodles are served hot or cold — on a warm day I chose cold noodles, which made the dish refreshingly satisfying.
Eating tips (for the full experience)
- Eat the chicken tempura while it’s still crispy. it’s seasoned and delicious on its own.
- Don’t be shy about pouring some of the curry-egg sauce over the rice. it turns into a fantastic little curry rice.
- Add iriko and tenkasu from the serving counter for extra flavor and texture.
- The noodles are thick and chewy very filling.
- Warning: the broth and sauce hold heat well pace yourself.
